The Royal Baby & 2013 Silver Penny Coins Royal Mint Give Away

Babies born on July 22, 2013 are entitled to claim a special silver penny coin pressed by the Royal Mint in commemoration of sharing the same birthday as the new Prince of Cambridge.

The tradition of handing a new born baby a silver coin is centuries old and is meant to bring wealth and happiness to the child.

There have been only two thousand and thirteen coins pressed and those families wanting to claim their penny have only until September 20th, 2013 to do so.

The director of the royal mint's commemorative coin, Shane Bisset explained that Britain's money makers wanted to give something back to all the other families across the nation that had a baby on the same day as the royal couple.

"Well obviously the arrival of the royal baby will be a very special day not just for The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge but also a very special day for the mothers and fathers across the country who will have their own child. And what we wanted to do was gift to each of those children a lucky silver penny on the arrival of their birth."

People wanting to claim their coin need to go to the royal mint's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/theroyalmint) and follow the instructions which involves scanning a copy of the new born's birth certificate.

One lady posted a comment wishing to claim a coin for her 64 year old husband who was born on the special date but as the Bissett clarified the offer is only open to those born on exactly the same day as the future monarch.

"In terms of the number of coins that we will be gifting, we will be gifting two thousand and thirteen coins for people who have their child born on the same day as the royal baby," Bisset said.

The penny that comes in either a blue or pink draw string pouch depending on the gender of the baby is made from .925 sterling silver as opposed to the regular copper plated steel, or pre-1992 bronze one penny piece.
